Memory of the Garden at Etten (Ladies of Arles) is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh. It was executed in Arles around November 1888 and is in the collection of the Hermitage Museum. It was intended as decoration for his bedroom at the Yellow House

In Gauguin's painting the figure of the older woman is recognisably Madame Ginoux who ran the Café de la Gare where Vincent had lodged and which he and Gauguin continued to patronise after moving into the nearby Yellow House.

In the picture of Gauguin, Madame Gina, who ran the Cafe de la Gar, where Vincent lived, recognizes the figure of an elderly woman, whom he and Gauguin continue to support after moving to the neighbouring Yellow House. The figures of Vincent are usually considered his sister Willemen and mother. However, Vincent's biographer Marc Tralbaut felt that the young woman, knowingly or unconsciously, was a representative of Kee Vos Stricker. He puzzled over it in a letter to his sister.

Finally, Gauguin arrived on 23 October 1888 to find Van Gogh in a state of near nervous exhaustion brought on by the excitement of his friend's arrival. Memory of the Garden at Etten was painted in November, a few weeks after Gauguin had moved in with Van Gogh and shows his influence, and also something of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-98), an artist that both Van Gogh and Gauguin greatly admired. Both artists painted the subject, working side-by-side, but it was an arrangement that would not last long. By mid-October Gauguin had written to Theo explaining that the two were simply incompatible and that he would soon be returning to Paris.

This painting was produced at Arles, in Provence, to which van Gogh moved in February 1888, embarking upon 15 months of frenetic painting - he produced over 200 canvases, despite or perhaps because of his depression and nervous crises. This painting recalls his native Holland and the garden of his parents' house at Etten. The artist's impressions of the bright sun and resonant colours of the south were combined with nostalgia for home. Working in Arles alongside Gauguin, he came under the strong influence of the latter's style, which can be seen in the flattened space and the broad areas of colour outlined with thick contours. But van Gogh's powerful romantic temperament demanded expression in a more dramatic style that was to be found in Gauguin's work, and he used intense colouring and rough surface texture to create an individual artistic language which expressed both the energy and drama of life.

However, all paintings are prepared with a large clean white border 4cm (1.6"} so that your local framer can easily stretch your painting.
