Josef Thoma ( 1828-1899 )

Josef Thoma , ( September 1828 in Vienna - December 15, 1899 in Ebendort ) was an Austrian landscape and genre painter .

Thoma was the son of the painter Josef Thoma senior. He studied at the Vienna Academy and worked after his education as a landscape painter in Vienna; frequent motifs of his paintings influenced by the romance , watercolors and drawings were alpine landscapes. He also used the pseudonym J. Gärtner known he was for his cityscapes of Ischl and Salzburg as well as landscapes from the Zillertal , the Puster Valley and the Steyr Valley .

He is not to be confused with the eponymous landscape painter Josef Thoma (1930-1988).
