Jacob Hart Lazarus (1822-1891)
Lazarus was a painter of portraits, figures, and history subjects. Lazarus attended the school of the National Academy of Design in 1841-1843. His teacher is also a very talented painter in New York-Henry Inman. Lazarus used to sign on the right of oil on canvas: J.H.Lazarus.
Lazarus also painted miniatures and scenes from the writings of Shakespeare and Washington Irving.
In 1850, Lazarus was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design. His paintings were also shown at the Boston Athenaeum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His style in painting portraits reflects the influence of his studies with Henry Inman.
He died in 1891 in New York. His wife and his daughter set up a memorial fund that the income have became the American Academy awards in Rome by the Metropolitan Museum to young artists for studying in Europe.
